Where Is Ha Long Bay?
Ha Long Bay is one of the most famous travel destinations in northern Vietnam. Located about 170 km from Hanoi, it’s an easy trip from the capital and a must-visit if you are exploring the northern part of the country.
The bay is known for its dramatic landscape of limestone formations rising from emerald waters and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Ha Long Bay covers an area of around 1,553 square kilometres and contains nearly 2,000 limestone islets and islands, creating one of the most spectacular seascapes in Southeast Asia.
Despite its popularity with visitors, the bay is also home to local communities. Around 1,600 people live in floating houses in several traditional fishing villages, maintaining a unique way of life on the water.

The Best Way to Explore Ha Long Bay
The most popular way to experience the bay is by taking a cruise through the limestone islands.
Travelers usually choose between:
Overnight cruises (the most popular option)
Two-night cruises
Day or half-day cruises
Why Take an Overnight Cruise in Ha Long Bay?
An overnight cruise allows you to enjoy the bay at different times of the day — sunset, evening, and sunrise — which makes the experience much more special. You also have time and opportunity to explore the bay and enjoy different activities.
There are many cruise companies operating in the area. For my trip, I chose Bhaya Cruises, a well-known operator offering traditional-style boats and organized excursions.

Staying on a Bhaya Cruise
The cruise ship featured comfortable, oriental-style cabins with large windows and en-suite bathrooms. The rooms were cozy and offered beautiful views of the bay as we sailed between the islands.
The onboard experience with Bhaya Cruises combines great food with cultural activities. Guests can enjoy freshly prepared Vietnamese cuisine, join a cooking demonstration to learn local recipes, and watch traditional Vietnamese music and dance performances.
One of the highlights of the cruise was simply relaxing on the open deck. With good weather, you can sit back with a cocktail and enjoy spectacular sunsets and sunrises over the limestone karsts.
Activities During the Cruise
A Ha Long Bay cruise is not just about the scenery — there are also several activities included in the itinerary.
During the cruise you can typically enjoy:
Kayaking through the calm emerald waters
Visiting floating fishing villages
Watching a Vietnamese cooking demonstration
Joining an early morning Tai Chi class on the deck
Relaxing on the sundeck while sailing between the islands
These activities make the cruise both relaxing and interactive.

Visiting Sung Sot – The “Cave of Surprises”
One of the highlights of the excursion is visiting Sung Sot Cave, also known as the “Cave of Surprises.”
This impressive cave is one of the largest in Ha Long Bay and consists of three enormous chambers filled with fascinating rock formations. Inside, colorful lighting highlights the dramatic stalactites and stalagmites, creating an almost surreal atmosphere.
Climbing Ti Top Island for the Best View
Another memorable stop on the cruise itinerary is Ti Top Island.
Visitors can climb a steep staircase to the top of the island, where breathtaking panoramic views of Ha Long Bay await. From the summit you can see the countless limestone islands scattered across the water.
At the base of the island there is also a small sandy beach, perfect for:
Swimming
Sunbathing
Relaxing before returning to the boat

When Is the Best Time to Visit Ha Long Bay?
The climate in the Ha Long Bay region is humid throughout the year.
Generally, the most favorable months to visit are:
Dry season:
September – November
March – May
However, these months are also peak tourist season, so the bay can be more crowded.
I visited Ha Long Bay in March, when the weather was misty, foggy, and humid, with temperatures around 22°C. Although visibility was sometimes limited, the mist gave the limestone islands a mysterious and atmospheric look, which made the landscape feel even more magical.
✅ Tip: If you enjoy photography, the foggy conditions can create incredibly dramatic images of the limestone formations.
