Benidorm, Spain: Beaches, Old Town & Things to Do

Updated: Jan 14

About Benidorm

Benidorm is a beautiful town-resort in the province of Alicante in eastern Spain, on the Mediterranean coast.

Once a tiny fishing village till the 1960s., today Benidorm is a very popular Spanish beach resort, one of the main tourist destinations on the Mediterranean, along the Costa Blanca region.

It is known for its untypical for Spain skyline dominated by many skyscrapers lined next to each other along the beach. Quite often people compare it to the American beach resorts like Miami.

The resort tends to get very crowded in the summer. It provides a very lively atmosphere, intense nightlife with numerous restaurants and clubs.

Stunning Beaches of Benidorm

Benidorm offers two very large golden sand beaches with crystal clear sea water - Levante and Poniente beaches. The are perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and water sports.

The broad promenades are lined with cafés, chiringuitos (beach bars), and rental spots for paddleboards or jet skis. For a slightly quieter experience, Mal Pas Beach offers a cozy cove with fantastic views of the Old Town.

Don't miss to visit El Balcon del Mediterraneo, a popular viewpoint that separates Levante and Poniente beaches. You can enjoy breathtaking views of the sea and beaches and take beautiful photos. El Balcon del Mediterraneo used to be a medieval castle and fortress in the XIV-XVI century built to defend against pirates raids. Nowadays only some remains of the walls can be seen.

Exploring the Old Town

Between Levante and Poniente beaches you will find the wonderful Old Town.

The Old Town provides a charming contrast to Benidorm’s modern skyline. Its narrow, winding streets are full of whitewashed buildings, boutique shops, and tapas bars, making it perfect for wandering, people-watching, and tasting authentic Spanish cuisine. In the evenings, the Old Town comes alive with cozy wine bars and lively nightlife.
