Victoria Falls Travel Guide: Zambia & Zimbabwe, Angel’s Pool & Helicopter Flight

Updated: 5 days ago

Few places on Earth make you feel so small, so alive, and so amazed at the same time as Victoria Falls.

Stretching across the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe, this natural wonder is one of Africa’s most unforgettable destinations — where roaring water, mist-filled skies, adrenaline adventures and breathtaking scenery come together in one spectacular experience.

Known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya — “The Smoke That Thunders” — Victoria Falls is one of the two largest waterfalls in the world (together with Iguazu Falls in Brazil and Argentina) and an absolute must-visit for anyone exploring southern Africa. It is officially recognized as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

Fascinating Facts About Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls is one of the most impressive natural wonders in the world and the largest waterfall curtain on Earth based on its combined width and height.

  • Width: approximately 1,708 meters (5,604 feet)

  • Height: between 80 and 108 meters (262–354 feet) depending on the section

  • Location: on the Zambezi River, forming the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe

  • Local name: Mosi-oa-Tunya, meaning “The Smoke That Thunders”, named after the

enormous spray and thunderous sound created by the falling water.

  • Named by: Scottish explorer David Livingstone, who became the first European

recorded to see the falls in 1855. He named them in honor of Queen Victoria, the reigning British queen at the time.

  • During peak rainy season, the mist from the falls can rise over 400 meters (1,300

feet) into the air and be seen from many kilometers away.

  • More than 500 million liters of water per minute can plunge over the edge during

high flow season.

  • Victoria Falls is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Why Visit Victoria Falls?

Victoria Falls is far more than just a waterfall. It’s an adventure destination, a nature escape, and one of those rare places that truly exceeds expectations.

Whether you choose to admire the falls from scenic viewpoints, swim at the edge of the world in Angel’s Pool, or soar above them in a helicopter, every angle reveals something magical.

Zambia or Zimbabwe – Which Side is Better?

The truth is: both sides are worth visiting.

Zambia Side

Zambia offers a more adventurous and immersive experience. This is where you’ll find:

  • Angel’s Pool / Devil’s Pool

  • Knife-Edge Bridge

  • Closer access to the river and gorge

  • Incredible dry-season viewpoints

Zimbabwe Side

Zimbabwe provides the most panoramic and classic views of the falls. This side is ideal for:

  • Wide viewpoints facing the main curtain of water

  • Best photography spots

  • Walking trails through rainforest mist

  • Powerful wet-season scenery

  • Helicopter flight above the falls

  • Abseiling down the Batoka Gorge — an adventurous activity where you descend down the steep rock walls of the Batoka Gorge using ropes and a harness, and then climb or hike your way back up.

If possible, visit both countries for the complete experience.

Angel’s Pool & Devils's Pool– The Ultimate Bucket List Experience

One of the most thrilling experiences at Victoria Falls is swimming in Angel’s Pool, a natural rock pool located right on the edge of the waterfall on the Zambia side.

When water levels are safe, guided tours take visitors to Livingstone Island where you can step into the pool and look directly over the edge of the falls.

It’s one of those surreal travel moments that feels impossible until you are there.

Standing at the edge with thousands of liters of water crashing below is both exhilarating and unforgettable.

Usually, there are 2-3 members of staff who will help you going into the pool. They will hold you, make photos of you and will make you feel safe and secure while in the pool.

Devil’s Pool is another famous natural infinity pool located right on the edge of Victoria Falls on the Zambia side. During the dry season, when water levels are low enough, visitors can join guided tours to swim in this extraordinary rock pool and peer over the dramatic drop of the falls.

Access depends entirely on seasonal water flow, so some travelers visit Angel’s Pool, while at other times Devil’s Pool becomes the main accessible experience.

Helicopter Flight Over Victoria Falls

If there is one experience you should not miss, it is a helicopter flight above Victoria Falls.

Often called the “Flight of Angels,” this scenic 15 min. ride gives you the most spectacular perspective of the falls, the Zambezi River, dramatic gorges and surrounding wildlife areas.

From above, you truly understand the scale and power of Victoria Falls.

The flights are operated only if the weather permits. In my case we waited one hour and a half for the weather to clear up and get a permission to fly.

During the flight you will enjoy seeing stunning aerial views of both Zambia and Zimbabwe, river bends and deep canyons.

For photographers, videographers and first-time visitors, this is highly recommended.

Best Time to Visit Victoria Falls

The best season depends on what you want to experience:

During High Water Season (February – May) you can expect:

Maximum waterfall power

Huge mist clouds

Most dramatic scenery

Some viewpoints may be soaked

I visited Victoria Falls in February 2026, during the rainy season, when the waterfall was at its most powerful. It was incredible to see it in full flow.

In some places, the mist and spray from the waterfall were so intense that it felt like it was raining. You may need a raincoat and a waterproof camera or a case for your phone.

During Dry Season (August – December) you can expect:

Better visibility

Ideal for Angel’s Pool / Devil’s Pool

Easier walking conditions

Best for helicopter photography

Where to Stay

Popular bases for visiting Victoria Falls include Livingstone (Zambia) – ideal for adventure activities and Victoria Falls Town (Zimbabwe) – great for classic views and hotels.

Both offer excellent accommodation options from budget stays to luxury lodges.

If you are looking for a peaceful stay surrounded by nature, A'zambezi River Lodge is a lovely option on the Zimbabwe side of Victoria Falls.

Set directly on the banks of the Zambezi River, the hotel offers a relaxing atmosphere with lush gardens, river views, swimming pool and easy access to the falls area. It is one of the few properties in Victoria Falls with true river frontage, which makes the setting especially memorable. Many guests also enjoy spotting wildlife around the grounds, adding to the authentic safari feel of the stay.

Travel Tips

  • Bring waterproof protection for your camera/phone. You can find waterproof cases

for your phone on spot.

  • Wear non-slip shoes. If you go to the Angel's pool or Devil's pool you will be

provided with special water shoes you need to put on. There are changing rooms where you take off your clothes and remain in swimming costume before going to the pools.

  • Carry passport if crossing the border

  • Book Angel’s Pool and Devil's Pool tours in advance

  • If your visit is during the rainy season make sure to use repellent against mosquitos. For a better protection it's advisable to buy a local ( African ) repellent.

  • Morning helicopter flights often have the best light. Flights are operated only if the

weather permits.

Victoria Falls vs Iguazu Falls

Iguazu Falls and Victoria Falls are considered two of the world's largest, most spectacular, and most iconic waterfalls, often competing for top honors.

Iguazu Falls is the largest system by width (approx. 2.7 km / 1.7 miles), consisting of 275 individual falls, while Victoria Falls boasts the largest single curtain of falling water.

It is taller at 108 meters (360 feet) compared to Iguazu's 64–82 meters.

Both are UNESCO World Heritage sites and ranked among the "New 7 Wonders of Nature" or top natural wonders globally.

Having been to both waterfalls, I recommend both of them as an unique, unforgettable, and once in a lifetime experience.

Victoria Falls is one of those destinations that leaves a lasting impression long after you leave.

Whether you’re floating at the edge in Angel’s Pool, watching the mist rise from scenic trails, or flying above in a helicopter, every moment feels extraordinary.

If you love nature, adventure, and unforgettable travel experiences, Victoria Falls deserves a place at the very top of your bucket list.
